This post will be my first of many #thriftflip projects that I hope to share with you and it’s also likely the easiest! All you do is cut the neck and shoulders off a men’s shirt and add an elastic band – plain and simple.
For those of you who are newer to sewing, I will take you through the steps below. Also, if you don’t have a sewing machine it is totally still doable. It may just take you a little longer, but you can throw on a show in the background and hand stitch.
Lets get started on your own DIY Men’s Shirt to Off The Shoulder Shirt.
mens shirt (go to Value Village)
elastic (I use .5″)
thread to match the shirt
sewing machine
scissors
thread
chalk
large safety pin
Draw a line straight from shoulder to shoulder.
Cut along the straight line
Fold along where you cut to make a fabric tunnel and pin.
I find it easiest to iron the tunnel down after to ensure it is equal all the way around.
Sew the fabric tunnel down with a strait stitch.
Leave a gap about 5cm at the start/finish so you can insert the elastic.
Measure your elastic around your shoulders and add 3″ extra to ensure you have enough to sew together at the end.
Attach a large safety pin to one end of your elastic and start to move through your fabric tunnel until you come out the other end.
Sew elastic together + close the seam.
Cut any threads.
